5 Signs Your Auckland Deck Needs Replacing

Static HTML

An ageing deck is more than an eyesore — it can be a serious safety hazard. Here are the warning signs every Auckland homeowner should watch for.

1. Visible Rot or Decay

Timber rot starts small but spreads fast in Auckland’s humid climate. Look for soft spots, discolouration, and fungal growth. Use a screwdriver — if it sinks in easily, the timber is compromised.

2. Wobbly Railings

Loose or wobbly railings are a red flag. Deck railings need to withstand 100kg of lateral force under NZ building code. If they move, don’t wait.

3. Rusty Fixings

Galvanised fixings corrode in coastal Auckland air. Rusted bolts and brackets weaken the entire structure. Look for rust stains or flaking metal.

4. Gaps Between Boards

Gaps wider than 10mm indicate board shrinkage or joist movement. Water gets in, accelerating decay underneath.

5. Spongy Feel Underfoot

If the deck bounces or feels soft, joists have likely rotted at the ledger board connection — the most expensive repair. Get it checked immediately.
